Taking care of your computer means ensuring that the hard disk is working at it optimum level. Also, your computer needs simple but regular maintenance to stay in good condition. Inside the computer, defragmenting and scanning the hard disk on a regular basis will help.
Defragmenting makes sure large files can be stored in such a way that access to them is as easy and quick as possible. Scanning checks the hard disk and floppy disks for errors. Windows has two useful tools - Disk Defragmenter and ScanDisk that carry out these tasks. You need to use the tools every week or so.
But the most important reason to defragment your files is when you save a large file, your computer will often split it up into fragments and store it in different locations on the hard disk. Your computer can still find the file, but it takes longer to do so. Disk defragmenter rearranges the fragments of a large file so that they are stored next to each other. This makes it easier and quicker for your computer to access files.
Outside your computer you can avoid potential problems such as your mouse seizing up or the keys on your keyboard becoming stuck, by frequent cleaning. And keeping your work space clean and tidy will create a more pleasant environment for everyone to work in. Ideally, clean your equipment at least once a month.
As with any type of cleaning, ensure that you have the correct materials for the job. Computer stores offer a variety of cleaning products, but a multipurpose cleaning kit is probably the best choice for the home user. A typical kit includes PC wipes, PC swabs, cleaning cloths, cleaning fluid and a cleaning card. You should also consider buying a dust spray.
Also remember, before starting any computer cleaning, spare a few minutes to check that those spaghetti wires are out of harm's way. Make sure you also unplug your equipment because it is never safe to use fluids around electricity.
